The property where our new fire station is located was once a part of Phoenix Steel. During site preparation for the new fire station, a couple large driveshaft gears from Phoenix Steel were found on the property. As a lasting memory to the steel company and the namesake for our town, these gears were placed among the flag poles at the fire station. The gears are set atop a bed of slag rock. Slag is a by-product of the steel making process - the leftover result of smelting ores to retrieve metals.
