At 1:37 PM, our department and West End EMS were alerted for an injured teenager in the area of the Schuylkill River behind the 500 block of Dayton Street. The caller reported the individual had sustained a knee injury from striking rocks while swimming in the area.

Initially, Engine 65 responded to the incident. Firefighters and medical personnel found the patient at the bottom of a steep embankment the river bank near the active railroad bridge. After assessing the scene, crews determined that the safest way to remove the patient was by boat

Engine 65 requested our boat respond, along with boats from Friendship Fire Company Diving-Rescue Unit and UPT Fire & Emergency Services. Two rescue boats were launched from the Black Rock Boat Ramp to retrieve the patient and responders. The patient was transported safely to the ramp, where a waiting ambulance provided treatment and transported to a nearby hospital.

Units cleared the scene after about 45 minutes.

Units: Engine 65, Utility 65-1, Boat 65-1
